Warum führte das Attentat von Sarajewo, das serbische Nationalisten am 28. Juni 1914 auf Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand und seine Frau verübten, zum Ersten Weltkrieg? Ist Europa in den Krieg 'hineingeschlittert', wie es der britische Premier Lloyd George einst formulierte? Oder lassen sich klare Verantwortlichkeiten benennen? Auf der Grundlage zeitgenössischer Quellen und langjähriger Forschungen schildert Annika Mombauer die Geschichte der Julikrise - vom Tod des Thronfolgers bis zur englischen Kriegserklärung an Deutschland am 4. August 1914. Dabei grenzt sie sich klar von neueren Tendenzen ab, die Verantwortung Österreich-Ungarns und des Deutschen Reiches für die Eskalation der Krise zu verwischen. Die politische und militärische Führung beider Länder wollte den außenpolitischen Befreiungsschlag und riskierte damit leichtsinnig einen Weltkrieg. Dass dieser allerdings zur 'Urkatastrophe' des 20. Jahrhunderts werden würde, konnte im Juli 1914 niemand ahnen. Annika Mombauer ist Senior Lecturer an der Geschichtsfakultät der Open University in Milton Keynes, Großbritannien. Sie ist eine der weltweit führenden Experten zur Julikrise. |
