Kurz bevor das 20. Jahrhundert zu Ende geht, schreibt die Studentin Eva Seemann einen langen Brief an ihre Ururgroßmutter. Eva weiß von dieser Hermine kaum mehr, als dass sie seit über fünfzig Jahren tot ist; und es gibt nicht einmal mehr ein Grab. Aber Eva besitzt ein Foto von ihr, und der jungen Frau, die es zeigt, fühlt sie sich merkwürdig nahe. "Liebes Minchen" beginnt sie ihren Brief und erzählt vom letzten Sommer: wie sie und Grigorij sich ineinander verliebt haben, wie sie zum ersten Mal ihren Großvater Robert, Minchens Enkel, in Berlin besuchte und was sie in der wiedervereinigten Stadt über ihre Familiengeschichte herausgefunden hat. Großvater Robert, einst ein gefeierter DDR-Schriftsteller, lebt noch im selben Haus, in dem vor hundert Jahren das Dienstmädchen Hermine Seemann arbeitete und wohnte. Nun soll die Torstraße 127, die so voller Geschichten ist, abgerissen werden. Gemeinsam mit einer Gruppe von jungen Leuten versuchen Robert und Eva das Haus zu retten. Denn die Torstraße 127 ist mehr als ein hinfälliges Gemäuer. Sie ist eines von vielen Häusern der Geschichte.
