Summary, etc. Der zweite Kreuzzug der Christenheit entwickelt sich 1187 zu einem Desaster: Saladin und sein heidnisches Heer nähern sich Jerusalem. Um die Sicherheit der Pilger zu gewährleisten sind die Templer gezwungen, Leute anzustellen, die sie sonst keines Blickes gewürdigt hätten. Das ist die Chance für den 16-jährigen Pagan Kidrouk. Er lässt sich bei den Templern als Knappe verpflichten, weil ihm seine Gläubiger wegen Spielschulden im Nacken sitzen. Nicht-Templern ist nämlich der Zugang zur deren Hauptquartier versperrt. Der Nachteil: Der Dienst als Knappe eines Ritters ist knochenhart und unerbittlich.
